DEPARTMENT FOR CULTURE, MEDIA AND SPORT - LISTED PLACES OF WORSHIP GRANT SCHEME

This scheme, operated under the aegis of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, was introduced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his March 2001 Budget.  It was - and still is - intended as an interim measure, pending the outcome of the proposals currently under review by the European Commission for a reduced rate of VAT of 5% on repairs and maintenance to listed places of worship.  The scheme is currently due to continue until 31 March 2011 unless a permanent reduced rate is achieved earlier.

Although the proposal being considered by the EC is for a reduction of the rate to 5%, the interim grant scheme as it presently stands returns the full amount of VAT incurred on eligible work carried out since 1 April 2004 to listed buildings used as places of worship (prior to April 2004 the refund was limited to the difference between 5% and the actual amount paid in VAT).

[The dedicated Repair Grants for Registered Places of Worship grant scheme (run in conjunction with the Heritage Lottery Fund) which covers churches and other places of worship apart from cathedrals, is unaffected and will continue.  For further details see separate entry in this Directory.]
